First off, I would like to thank you for giving me a shot and checking out my new blog! This is a personal blog of mine, and I’m hoping to start posting updates about the various goings on in my life here as regularly as I can. I’m still learning the ropes of all of this stuff, so we’ll have to see how this works out! (:
So, who am I? My name is Brock Martin. I’m 20 years old studying Public Relations at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. I also work part time at the Rec center here as a head lifeguard. That’s what I do, but I like to think there’s a little more to me than that.
I grew up here in the Lafayette area, so Purdue has always been a big part of my life, and it wasn’t much of a question as to where I wanted to go to school. What was a question was what I wanted to do. Like most kids I dreamed of growing up to be lots of things, a veterinarian, an astronaut (I still dream of that one a bit to be honest), a pilot, etc. Becoming a pilot stood out to me for a long time, well into my college career, actually. I’ve always been fascinated by aviation and aerospace. It always has been and always will be perhaps my largest passion.
So, why in the world would I change my path into the field of Communications?
That’s a very good question, one that I’ve (not surprisingly) been asked and have fielded many times. It may seem weird at first, but it’s also a passion of mine. I’ve always been interested in persuasion, and found the power of speech interesting. I even remember when I was young and would play video games, I would always max out my character’s speech or charisma stats first. From a young age I realized the power of being a good orator, and of being able to solve problems through communication. It’s also something that I’ve always had a bit of a knack for too. I always looked forward to presenting speeches in classes, I joined the speech team in middle school and I absolutely loved every minute of it (they cut it out of the budget when I went to high school so that was the end of my speech team career unfortunately). There’s just something about standing in front of a crowd, and being able to influence so many people at one time and watching others become enthralled in what the speaker is telling them. It’s awesome.
“Oh, so what are you going to do with that?”
This is a question that I get asked just as much as the previous one, if not more. Purdue, if you didn’t already know, is widely renowned as a top engineering school. So it’s not a big surprise that I’m surrounded by engineering students. Often times it seems as though liberal arts students are seen as second class citizens around here, which is sad, but true. Anyways, what I would like to do with my degree. You know those people that stand in front of huge crowds of people and give these awesome keynote presentations at different events? Yeah, that. I plan on going into marketing or public relations after school. Perhaps even one day working as a CMO, or starting my own firm, who knows where the future will take me?
The fun part is, you get to experience that journey too. Right here. The whole purpose of this blog is for me to 1.) Get familiar and gain experience with blogging and 2.) Document and share my adventures and experiences in life with the world. My hope is that through this blog, I can gain some insights about myself and maybe even gain some new skills in the process!
So, with all of that being said, I’m looking forward to the journey ahead and I can’t wait to share it all! With any luck, I’ll continue updating this blog at least semi-regularly with any thing of interest that pops up into my life or my mind. So, until next time- I’m signing off (:
